The place

Three thundering waterfalls on the Canada–US border, with 2,800 cubic metres of water a second going over the Horseshoe. Ride the boat into the mist or walk the tunnels behind the wall of water.

The sheer volume of water is what stays with you — millions of litres a minute pouring over the Horseshoe in a permanent cloud of spray you can feel from the promenade. The Canadian side has the best head-on view, and the boat cruise takes you right into the churning basin at the foot of the falls.

Beyond the water there's the Journey Behind the Falls tunnel, the White Water Walk along the rapids, and an illumination-and-fireworks show after dark in summer. It's the most family-friendly stop on this list, with paved paths, the WEGO shuttle and plenty of food and lodging within walking distance.
